Physical Education (PE) – Intent, Implementation and Impact

Intent

At Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Primary School, our physical education is an integral part of our curriculum, and we strive to create a ‘whole school’ culture which aims to inspire an active generation to enjoy PE, encourage school unity and celebrate achievements. We provide a safe and supportive environment for children to flourish in a range of different physical activities which is essential in supporting their physical, emotional, and social development. We aspire for children to adopt a positive mindset towards personal health and wellbeing and believe that anything can be achieved with determination and resilience. At Our Lady Queen of Peace, we offer a dynamic and varied program of activity to ensure that all children progress physically through a unique and fully inclusive PE curriculum. Our curriculum aims to improve the well-being and fitness of all children, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes. We aim to deliver high quality teaching and learning opportunities that enable all children to achieve their personal best. Children are encouraged to participate in competitive sport and celebrate achievements no matter how big or small. We aim for all children to be physically active for sustained periods of time and to be able to make informed decisions to lead healthy and active lives thus, embedding life-long values. Swimming is an important life skill, and we aspire for all children to leave primary school being able to swim at least 25meters.

Implementation

  • Pupils receive two hours of high-quality PE teaching each week, delivered through a broad and balanced curriculum covering games, dance, gymnastics, athletics, swimming, and outdoor adventurous activities.

  • Every child has access to swimming lessons in each year group to ensure confidence, competence, and safety in the water.

  • The school uses the GetSet4PE scheme to provide a clear, consistent, and progressive approach to teaching, ensuring coverage of all National Curriculum requirements and supporting staff with high-quality resources.

  • Learning is sequenced progressively so that children build on prior knowledge and develop increasing competence in fundamental movement skills, ensuring a strong foundation in physical literacy.

  • Daily activity is promoted through initiatives such as Mile a Day, ensuring children are active beyond timetabled PE lessons.

  • Playground zones and playground leaders encourage structured, inclusive, and enjoyable physical activity during break and lunch times, giving pupils opportunities to practise skills and lead others in play.

  • Lessons are designed to ensure all children are included and challenged, with opportunities for both individual improvement and collaborative teamwork.

  • Staff access ongoing CPD and support from specialist coaches, ensuring lessons are of a consistently high quality and inspire pupils to achieve their best.

  • A wide range of extra-curricular clubs, sporting festivals, and inter- and intra-school competitions encourage participation, teamwork, and a love of sport.

  • PE links with PSHE and science to reinforce the importance of an active lifestyle, healthy choices, and positive wellbeing.

Impact

  • Pupils develop physical literacy – the motivation, confidence, and competence to take part in a wide range of physical activities.

  • Children understand the importance of physical activity for their physical and mental health and are motivated to lead active lives both in and out of school.

  • Pupils demonstrate sportsmanship, resilience, and respect, applying these values in the wider school community.

  • A high proportion of children take part in clubs and competitions, showing enthusiasm and pride in representing themselves and their school.

  • Swimming across all year groups ensures that every child leaves primary school with essential life-saving skills, knowledge of water safety, and the ability to swim at least 25 metres competently, confidently, and using a range of strokes.

  • Daily activity opportunities, including Mile a Day, playground zones, and pupil leadership roles, contribute to higher activity levels and a culture of active play.

  • PE contributes positively to whole-child development, improving focus, behaviour, and self-esteem.

  • By the end of Key Stage 2, pupils leave Our Lady Queen of Peace Primary with the physical literacy and skills to continue participating in a variety of sports and activities, ready for secondary school and beyond.
