Autumn 1

During this term Year 1 will be studying the book 'Harry the Happy Mouse' giving us lots of opportunities for writing rhymes and poems. In Science we will be looking at Animals including Humans, learning about classification and animal diets. We are learning all about Kings and Queens in History, ending with a royal banquet of our own. We will then draw portraits of our Queen in Art.

Autumn 2

During Autumn 2, we will be studying the traditional tale of 'Little Red Riding Hood' using the story to help us create our own version of the tale. We will look into character profiles and take part in learning and performing a poem. Towards the end of the term we will look at the book 'Mog's Christmas' using it as inspiration for our own Christmas day diary entry, we will look at how we feel on the big day and comparing it to Mog, as well as the events that take place on throughout the Christmas period. We will be learning all about the United Kingdom in Geography, we will learn the 4 countries that make up the UK and their main characteristics. In Science, we will be working scientifically to determine the best material to build a house out of, using the traditional tale of 'The Three Little Pigs' to help us. In art, we will be colour mixing and using our knowledge to help make our new year calendar.

Spring 1

During Spring 1, we will be focussing on the book 'The Enormous Turnip', giving us opportunities to write our own version of the story, we will then use what we have learn to write instructions on 'How to Plant A Seed'. We will then move on to looking at the poem 'Mary, Mary, Quite Contrary' and use the same structure to write our own garden inspired rhyme. We will be looking at great explorers in History, learning about what it means to become a great explorer and how we remember them. In Science, we will be studying everyday materials, exploring their properties and how they can be used.

Spring 2

During Spring 2, we will be focussing on the book 'If You Come to Earth' giving us lots of creative opportunities for writing. We will make mind maps, write lists, practice our perfect sentence writing and use this knowledge to write and informal letter to an Alien. In Geography and Science we will be taking a deep dive into the wonders of weather, looking closely at how the weather changes throughout the seasons and how that effects animals and humans. In our Art lessons we will explore the artwork of lots of different famous Artists and recreating a piece of their artwork each week.

Summer 1

During Summer 1, we will be focussing on the book 'I Want My Hat Back', we will be taking lots of opportunities to include drama into our lessons, exploring character feelings and using illustrations to predict what will happen in the story. In Science, we will begin growing our knowledge about plants, planting beans, identifying wild plants and naming garden plants, as well as learning how plants grow. Throughout our History we will be going back in time to look at Prehistoric Britain, taking each lesson to progress through a different stage of prehistory. In Art we will use our knowledge of our History lessons to create a collage of a Celtic shield.

Summer 2

During summer 2, year 1 will be focussing on improving our writing through the book 'You Choose' written by Pippa Goodhart. We will be working on our writing, making sure we are consistently writing perfect sentences and making our writing as creative and descriptive as possible. In Science we will be consolidating all of the learning we have done throughout this year whilst strengthening our skills to help us become even better scientists, there will be lots of investigations and experiments taking place! Our Geography topic this half term is 'Our Local Area' which we are extremely excited about exploring, this will link to our Art in which we will be making 3D sculptures of our favourite Liverpool Landmarks. We are going to have lots of fun raising our own butterflies from caterpillars this half term.
