  • Free School Meals

    Mon 30 Mar 2020

There may be some confusion over who is entitled to receive free school meals during this unusual time of school closure.

As a school, we offer Universal Free School Meals to all pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 with no cost to parents.  However, only those who are claiming certain benefits (see link for list) and have applied for free school meals entitlement through Sefton's Education Benefit's Section are eligible to receive the free school meals funding.

We have contacted those eligible via phone and text message regarding collection of food parcels between 9:30 and 11:00 am on Tuesday.  We would appreciate it if those parents could contact the school office on 01519283676 during those times if they are unable to collect this parcel.  Thank you.

More information about claiming free school meals can be found here - Sefton Council Free Meals

    Our ref:    JCS-covid19 23/03/20

    Dear Parents and Carers

These are unprecedented times and I would like to thank parents, carers and schools for their support over the last week, these are difficult times for everyone.

Following the government announcement last week that schools are to close for the majority of children.

Our schools have been asked to remain open for children of key workers and vulnerable children. The majority of our schools are currently remaining open and will do so, for as long as they possibly can. Many will try to provide some provision over the Easter holidays.

This is a fast-changing time and so when it becomes difficult for schools to remain open, we will move to a hub system in each area. We will notify parents and carers as soon as these arrangements are in place.

We ask that you follow the advice provided by the government. Please follow the link for the latest guidance from the government for parents and carers:

    https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/closure-of-educational-settings-information-for-parents-and-carers/closure-of-educational-settings-information-for-parents-and-carers

However, we would like to draw your attention to the following paragraph:

If children can stay safely at home, they should, to limit the chance of the virus spreading. That is why the government has asked parents to keep their children at home, wherever possible, and asked schools to remain open only for those children who absolutely need to attend.

For those of you with children who are entitled to free school meals please speak to the school as they have local arrangements in place.

Many of our schools are operating a triage system and will be prioritising children with parents who are both key works, single parents who are key workers and vulnerable children. We ask you to support your school and work with them through these challenging times.

Please be assured that we are all working together to ensure that we can provide support for all our families.

    Stay safe

    Regards

OLQP Primary School – Coronavirus Update – School Closure and Key Workers 19/03/20

    Dear Parent / Carer

The normal running of our school will end this Friday, 20th March.

We will re-open on Monday, 23rd at the normal times but only for children who we need to ascertain are in the Key Worker Group. This was due to be identified to us by the Cabinet Office today but it has not come to us in time for home-time.

We need this number to be as low as possible in order to keep staffing levels as high as we can for as long as possible. If you are not on the following list – school is highly likely to be closed. WE CAN ONLY CONFIRM PLACES TOMORROW WHEN THE DIFINITIVE LIST COMES IN FROM GOVERNMENT – THIS IS JUST TO INDICATE TO US POTENTIAL NUMBERS. If you are on the list but can manage the situation without effecting vulnerable groups (e.g., it is recommended that children should not be looked after by grandparents) then you are welcome to keep the children at home.

PLEASE RETURN THIS LETTER TO SCHOOL TOMORROW, FRIDAY, 20TH MARCH ONLY IF YOU TICK YES IN ANY OF THE BOXES AND REQUIRE A SCHOOL PLACE

    Key Worker Role

    YES

    YES to both parents

    NHS Staff – any role

    Police Staff – any role

Emergency Service Staff – any role

Children on a CP Plan (must attend school – you will know if this is your child)

Children on a CIN plan (you will know if this is your child)

Children with an EHCP (you will know if this is your child)

Teaching or School Support Staff working during the school day

Delivery Workers with no other form of suitable childcare

Supermarket Staff with no other form of suitable childcare

Careworker with no other form of suitable childcare

We have identified the children in school who would qualify for FREE SCHOOL MEALS – this is likely not to everyone who has a Free School Meal – we are hoping to have more information regarding potential vouchers TOMORROW.

ALL children should NOT attend at all if they or any of your family exhibits any symptoms as previously noted in detail. Self-Isolation applies here.

                                                                               Continued over the page

There will be no doubt more information and other issues which will need addressing but for now, this information is vital for us to be able to gauge our school situation.

Thank you for your continued support and co-operation. I am trusting that all information provided to us is a truthful representation of your current circumstances. The situation over the Easter period will be addressed as soon as we have more information. We may at some point require evidence of your employment. It is also uncertain as to whether the Key Worker role must apply to BOTH parents – hence the extra box in order to inform us better. As I write this, there also is a big question mark over school staff.

    Your Name : ……………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

    Child’s Name : …………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

    Coronavirus: required closure

    Dear parents/carers,

Re: Coronavirus update – school closure to most pupils

Following on from my last update, I’m now writing to let you know that we have now been instructed to close the school to almost all children after this Friday until further notice.

As advised by the government, we will do all we can to stay open for the children of key workers (e.g. NHS staff, police, others in frontline services) and children with certain needs.

We are waiting for the government to publish more information on what this means, but it would help us in the meantime if you could let us know if you think your child may fall into one of these categories. Please contact the school office to pass on this information and the details. We’ll be in touch again as soon as we are sure who this does apply to.

All other children will need to stay at home, so we ask that you do not send your child into school from Monday onwards.

Please note that this is a national closure – as you may have heard in the news – so while it is a challenging situation, we are not alone. We’ll re-open fully as soon as we can and will let you know when this is by posting this on our website following further government announcements.

What we’ll continue doing while your child is at home

Your child’s learning is of course important to us, so we have posted year group learning materials on our school website to assist with this. This information can be accessed via the latest news tab on our website.

If your child usually receives free school meals we will also be in touch with more information about how we will continue to provide this, with support from a scheme that the government has just announced.

This is as much as we know right now and we appreciate your continued patience with as we deal with this ever-changing situation. We understand that this latest news will have an impact on you and your family and it’s far from ideal, but we’ll continue to keep in touch with any updates as the situation develops.

And remember: if you or your child feels ill and you want to know what to do next, please use NHS 111 online.

Thank you again for your continued support, and we will be in touch with more information when we can.

    Yours sincerely,

    Mrs J Travers

    Headteacher

    Reading

As I am sure you are aware reading at our school is really valued and we recognise the importance of sharing a book at home to improve reading skills. We are therefore recommending the website www.home.oxfordowl.co.uk to help to continue this learning at home.

Help your young child learn to read, and love to read, with the free eBook library. The eBooks have been developed for children aged 3–11, to teach them to read using phonics.

As well as much-loved characters such as Biff, Chip and Kipper and Winnie the witch, you’ll also find some great non-fiction eBooks to help your child explore their world.

I have included a full table of Oxford Levels and book bands used at our school. It will help you to become familiar with which levels suits your child (your child will be aware of their current reading colour) and how levels 1-20 relate to book bands.  Most of our KS2 children are free readers and can choose books to read for pleasure.

It is very important that phonics is continued at home. As you are aware we use read write inc and this website will guide you through everything you need to know about the approach we use to phonics in school including videos regarding pronunciation, speed sounds etc.

There are also reading comprehensions for our older children to continue to improve SATS skills.

Other recommended websites linked to reading:

EPIC – thousands of free ebooks so either join for 30 days free or email school for information.  www.getepic.com

Phonics play is a great website with games for each phase, especially for children in year one who have their phonics screening this year.

World book online provides thousands of free online books too.

If you do not have access to the internet please contact the school and we will support you in a different way.

School is open as usual today however we understand that lots of our families are self isolating at home. We will be uploading online learning resources and recommended sites to use during this time. Our staff numbers are decreasing daily and we are making adjustments accordingly. Therefore the resources will be available sometime during the day. We ask all families to take care at such an unpredictable time.
